Dense fog and wet roads prove to be a dangerous mix on area roads - and make for a deadly combination on one Southwest Virginia highway.
Winter's fury took a costly toll around this area and in many Eastern states.
Nowhere was it more apparent, than on Interstate 77 in Carroll County, where a fatal crash backed up traffic for hours.

The Waynesboro couple killed in Carroll County today have been identified.
They are 72-year-old Laurence Rogers and his wife, 70 year old Ann Barbro Rogers.

Superintendent Wayne Tripp expects another public hearing once the school board gathers information on possible sites should the decision, down the road, be one in favor of a new school.

Confederate supporters want the F-B-I to investigate an act of vandalism as a hate crime.
Someone burned a mural of General Robert E- Lee off of Richmond's floodwall.
A city police officer noticed it late yesterday.
Governor Gilmore and even Sa'ad (SOD) El-Amin - who opposed including Lee's portrait on the floodwall - are condemning the act of vandalism.
But El-Amin says the mural should NOT go back up, because it would invite more violence.
Tomorrow Elian Gonzalez's lawyers will be in court- it's the latest step in their fight to keep the boy in the United States.

Rosa Hadden was a year younger than Elian -- only five years old -- when her father smuggled her to Roanoke from Cuba.

Virginia Transportation Secretary Shirley Ybarra (why-BARE-uh) renewed her drivers license today on a laptop computer, with reporters watching.
Virginia is the first state in the nation to allow drivers to renew their licenses online, in real time.
D-M-V workers will check your driving record and mail the license to you the next day.
Roanoke firefighters braved the elements early this morning...
to put out a house on Crescent Street.
They had trouble getting the flames under control .. because of the way the house was built.
Investigators say the fire was accidental, probably related to the home's heating system.
A family of five escaped the fire safely, and no one was injured.
The elements also meant bad news for Smith Mountain Lake firefighters.

They had just bought their new 170-thousand-dollar fireboat when it sank last week.
Now firefighters say heavy wind is to blame - it either tilted the boat or swept so much water onto it that the bilge pump could not keep up.

Only the radios and a couple windows were broken.

A federal judge decided today to let Verna Lewis remain out on bond while her appeal is pending.

He says he was inspired by the political success of former colleague and current Minnesota Governor, Jesse Ventura

UVa picked up a big win last night at U-Hall.
The Cavaliers won their second straight conference game with the 87-85 win over North Carolina.
The Tarheels' woes continued as UNC dropped its third straight game.
This North Carolina turnover started a Cavalier streak. Donald Hand with the great bounce pass to Chris Williams for the exclamation point, two of his team high 24.
Hand drives in among the trees and dishes off to Travis Watson. Watson gets it on the second try.
With the Tarheels down by 11, Joseph Forte goes inside to Jason Capel. The bucket's good and the foul shot finishes the three point play.

And at times it looked like the student would beat the teacher, Indiana with the turnover and Dean Oliver gets three the old fashioned way for the Hawkeyes.
Then Rob Griffin hits a long three to extend the Iowa lead.
AJ Guyton canned 20 for the Hoosiers and the Hawkeyes missed a last second shot to tie it and number 11 Indiana wins it 74 to 71.
The General Motors' Pontiacs excelled in two days of testing at Daytona.

Mike Sherman is returning to Wisconsin as head coach.
