The snow was falling when Roanoke firefighters were sent out to battle a house fire this morning, but that wasn't their biggest problem.

The blaze on Crescent Street began just before four a-m.
Firefighters had trouble getting the flames under control .. because of the way the house was built.
Investigators say the fire was accidental, probably related to the home's heating system.
A family of five escaped the fire safely, and no one was injured.

Smith Mountain Lake firefighters say they've figured out why their new 170-thousand-dollar fireboat sank.

They say heavy wind either tilted the boat or swept so much water onto it that the bilge pump could not keep up. The volunteer firefighters say their earlier guess was wrong: a valve did NOT lock open. Only the radios and windows were broken.

Doctor Verna Lewis will not have to report to prison in two weeks as scheduled.
Judge Sam Wilson decided today to let her remain out on her own recognizance, while she appeals her conviction for filing false tax returns.
Judge Wilson HAD order the Daleville phychiatrist to report to prison February 1st to begin serving an 18-month sentence. Now she can wait at least until the U-S Supreme Court settles another case with a similar appellate argument, before she does her time.
Even while the appeal is pending, though, Dr. Lewis WILL have to pay 122-thousand dollars in fines and restitution Judge Wilson imposed last month.
