Sams, a teacher with the school for seven years, was shot in a neighbor's driveway Sunday, as she and her two small children returned home from church.
Investigators say when she discovered David Sams was hiding in the back of her van with a shotgun, she pulled into the driveway. He shot her twice as she tried to escape. Then turned the gun on himself.
Carroll County's sheriff says that David Sams was due in court later this week to face domestic violence charges.

He doesn't know if that prompted the shooting.

Authorities say a working smoke detector might have saved a Lynchburg man who died in a house fire last night.

59- year- old Ronald Lee Day suffered severe burns when his home on Miller Street caught fire around 12:15 a-m.
Day died at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Two other residents told authorities the batteries had been taken out of the homes' smoke detector two days earlier because it had been "acting up".
No word yet on what started the fire.

City Council approved a settlement with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. It calls for a civil penalty and community service projects that will add another 525- thousand dollars to the cost of the cleanup.

Christiansburg will be ranked number one in the state in tomorrow's group 2A poll after beating Grundy over the weekend. Head coach Kevin Dresser's new Hawkeye Hall complex should ensure success for years to come. Steve Mason explains.

((The 6000 foot facility in the Christiansburg area opened in October of 1999. Kevin Dresser purchased the building for the Hawkeye East Wrestling Club. The rec program contains around 100 kids from kindergarten up to 12th grade. Twice a week, wrestlers from Hawkeye East, the Blue Demon Wrestling Club, and grapplers from Pulaski, Floyd, Blacksburg and Rural Retreat High Schools learn about wrestling and life.
