(( The last moments of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 were apparently filled with terror.
Thats the impression left by investigators, as they search for a cause of the crash of the MD-83 jetliner. Jim Hall, NTSB Chairman:
At an afternoon news conference, NTSB officials gave a detailed description of the fatal flights last moments. data from radar and the planes flight recorders indicates a terrifying plunge into the Pacific.
Investigators say Flight 261 went into a seven thousand-foot dive, then regained some semblance of controlthen rolled upside down as it plunged another 17-thousand feet into the ocean. Officials also say radar shows something, possibly a piece of the plane, breaking off just as its final plunge began. Hall: LAST NIGHT, SAN FRANCISCO: Meanwhile problems continued for trouble-plagued Alaska Airlines. In another, apparently unrelated, incident, an MD-80 jet made an emergency landing at San Francisco International Airport. It occurred moments after takeoff because sparks were seen flying from an engine. Coincidentally the plane was flying the same number of passengers and crew and the same route as the doomed Flight 261.
