(( Even BEFORE the F-A-A ordered the EMERGENCY inspections of some 11 hundred MD-80s and DC-9s, many airlines had already started doing it VOLUNTARILY. What kind of aircraft is it?
Passengers were getting nervous and airlines weren't taking any chances. I'm looking in the seat pocket now to see what kind of plane I'm on.
So far, two days BEFORE the F-A-As deadline and with only a small number of delays close to HALF the nations MD-80 fleet will have been inspected but a handful of other problems have been found its unknown if they're related to the crash. with the jets horizontal stabilizers have been found. JACK MACEVOY, RETIRED BOEING ENGINEER: I think you'll find a lot of those cases, the systems that are being checked out are perfectly normal, its just reaction, a nervous reaction to the situation.
The F-A-A issued the order after Alaska Airlines GROUNDED two of its MD-80s when mechanics found metal shavings in the JACK SCREW the assembly that moves the stabilizer up and down.
Its the SAME part investigators now suspect of causing the crash of Alaska Airlines flight 261. I think safety should come first. If I was one of those 88 passengers I certainly would have wanted them to check that jack screw.
Investigators believe something in the MD-80s tail assembly broke just before the crash. Parts retrieved from the ocean floor support that theory.
Shards of metal were wrapped around the jackscrew itself, and the brass colored Gimbal nut similar to this one, was found with its threads nearly stripped.
So far, investigators are unsure whether THAT was the result of the crash, or something else. COWAN: The rest of the inspections will be completed over the weekend and no plane will fly until its been checked off. But so far, investigators say the inspections prove that one of the most popular planes in the US fleet, is still safe to fly. Lee Cowan, CBS News, Washington.))
