Hundreds gathered to renew pledges of love or pray for love they hoped to find.
Many attended mass in the church where the third century bishop is buried.
There is no clear agreement on why St. Valentine is associated with lovers.
One version of the legend suggests the bishop was killed for defying a Roman emperor who had banned marriage because he feared husbands would be tempted to stay at home with their wives rather than fight wars.
Another is that when Valentine was bishop of the city he helped a young couple whose parents were opposed to their marriage. After helping the couple, Valentine supposedly gave them a present of flowers.

It probably doesn't come as a surprise to many of you that today is Valentine's Day. But if you've slipped up and forgotten that loved one far away from home, your options are limited. This late, you're not going to get much delivered in time. If that's the case, check out our website of the day.
Egreetings-dot-com is the place to send that last minute e-mail card. But what you'll find there is not just a line of text over a picture of a heart.
You can choose from a living stationary to animated cards featuring the Three Stooges and Cupid.
The greetings can range from the sentimental to the silly and they can use either their words or there own
A word of warning though, the site has been very busy today, so you may have to keep trying. Also remember, in most cases diamonds are a girls best friend, and your loved one on the other end probably knows this is a free service, so they'll know how much you spent on them.
So while love is in the air today, you can head to today's website of the day through a link to our page at WDBJ7-dot-com. I'm Patrick Evans.
