The next two days will be busy for the state's General Assembly.
Tomorrow is the deadline for each chamber of the State's General Assembly to act on its own bills.
As a result, the Senate and House of Delegates will hold marathon floor sessions today and tomorrow. A number of issues are still unresolved, including Governor Gilmore's proposal to use 40 percent of state tobacco settlement money to help finance two-and-a-half billion dollars in transportation projects.

Yesterday afternoon, the House Courts of Justice Committee approved a handful of interesting bills.
One would lessen the penalty for oral or certain other sex acts between consenting adults from a felony to a misdemeanor.

((DEL. KAREN DARNER/D-ARLINGTON: WHAT WE'VE LOOKED FOR IN THE PAST HAS BEEN JUST DECRIMINALIZING IT AND SAYING THERE SHOULDN'T BE ANY PENALTY FOR THIS CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY IN THE COMMONWEALTH. BUT, AND MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT IT'S AGAINST THE LAW. BUT I WORKED WITH SOME FOLKS LAST YEAR AT THE END OF THE SESSION, AND WE WENT TO THE IDEA OF LOOKING FOR IT TO BE A MISDEMEANOR, PARTICULARLY BECAUSE OF THE PENALTIES ATTACHED TO FELONIES.))

The committee also said yes to a bill that would let felons petition a circuit court to restore their voting rights after they've served their prison time.
Current Virginia law leaves that decision up to the Governor.

Yesterday, the House Courts of Justice Committee also approved a bill giving people sentenced to death more time to produce new evidence on appeal.
The committee voted 12-to-11 to send the bill to the House floor.
Virginia law allows condemned inmates only 21 days after sentencing to present new evidence pointing to their innocence.
The new bill would extend the deadline to three years -- but inmates would be allowed to raise new evidence only twice.
