Sources close to the investigation say authorities have been zeroing in on the man as a possible suspect for some time.
This week-- they secured search warrants to further their investigation.
A judge has sealed the documents but sources say authorities have taken blood samples from the man.
They've also impounded his vehicle.
Investigators have also searched a residence in Floyd County looking for a weapon.
The evidence that was retrieved has been sent to the state crime lab in Roanoke.

A federal judge today granted Michael Fulcher a new trial.
Fulcher has long insisted he was gathering evidence of drug smuggling at Bland Prison.
Instead, the 41-year old inmate was convicted last August as the ring leader.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Roanoke/December, 1999]

It all comes down to the word of D-E-A Agent Don Lincoln. Though Lincoln HAD said he specifically told Fulcher there wasn't enough marijuana involved to justify a federal investigation, Lincoln changed his tune after Fulcher was convicted.
Lincoln wrote the judge, saying he may have led Fulcher to believe he wanted the inmate's help.
Prosecutors then turned on their own agent, suggesting the Fulchers must "have something" on Lincoln, that they blackmailed him into recanting.
"If Lincoln faces any risk, it is not from the Fulchers, but from his own agency," writes Judge Jackson Kiser in a 30-page opinion filed today. The judge says: Lincoln "stuck his neck out" by writing the letter, saying it "enhances Lincoln's credibility."
