A 14 year-old Bassett High School student died today after collapsing in class.
Tiffany Craighead was in 9-th grade.
There's no word yet on what caused her death. Henry County's School Superintendent says this a tremendous loss for the school -- and that counselors will be at Bassett High School tomorrow to talk with students.
Due to the loss - the Piedmont District basketball tournament -- scheduled for tonight was postponed until tomorrow.

John McCain may have racked up surprising primary victories recently - but George W- Bush is still the strong Republican favorite in our area.
That's the finding of a News 7 poll released today.

The Mason-Dixon poll of 621 likely Virginia voters shows - statewide - 48 per cent favor Bush, 37 per cent are for McCain.
Bush gets the most support in western and southwest Virginia .. 57 per cent, almost double McCain's 29.
In Southside and Central Virginia - Bush has a 54 to 31 edge over McCain.
Among those saying they're Independents or Democrats, McCain takes the lead 54 percent to Bush's 25.

A disgruntled worker apparently is to blame for a fire at Bedford's Rubatex plant this morning.

The blaze started in an extrusion oven in the plant's Waltex division around six.
Police say the worker.. who reportedly was about to be let go.. vandalized several pieces of equipment before leaving.
The suspect has not yet been arrested, so police have not released his name.

He reportedly drew a semi-automatic pistol on the officer who found him and refused to drop it, so the officer shot him.

He's suspected of planting two car bombs in Chesterfield County, and a third bomb at an ironworks plant in Petersburg over two weeks ago.

Our very own Mike Stevens is not just a sportscaster. Last night, using the lethal diamond press, Coach Stevens led his son's team to victory at half time of the ODAC women's tournament game between Roanoke and Washington and Lee. After falling behind by a basket, the Cave Spring Hawks won against the Cave Spring Hornets. The ODAC invites local rec teams to come out and play throughout the tournament. Now your numbers.

Radford University's men's basketball team clinched at least a tie for the Big South regular season championship by beating High Point 74-65 tonight on the road. Mike Hornbuckle lead five Highlanders in double figure scoring with 16 points. Radford is now 17 and 9 and 11 and 2 in the conference

The Virginia Tech women played host to the La Salle Lady Explores last night at Cassell Coliseum in a crucial Atlantic 10 Western Conference match up.

It was senior night at the Cassell. Kim Seaver and Missy Lemons were both honored for their contributions to the Tech program over the last four years.
In the first half, Bonnie ball was rollin with quick passing. Crystal Starling gets the assists with the dish to Nicole Jones, she rips rope and is fouled, Tech was out in front.
The Lady Hokies then go on the fast break. Amy Wetzel finds Sarah Hicks down court, she steps up and rips rope for the long 2, 15-8 Tech.

The Lady Maroons of Roanoke College will play Guilford in the semi finals of the ODAC tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

The semi finals of the Three Rivers district tournament were held at Blacksburg high school yesterday evening.

In the opener Radford trailed Glenvar by four at the half.
And when Glenvar's chad Phillips scored on the put back the Highlanders went up by six.
But the Bobcats rallied Shane Nichols gets it on the break and scores the layup to make it 32 to 28 Highlanders.
Then with less than a minute left in the third Ben fisher gets the steal and layup and the game was tied at 32.

Giles would jump out to the early lead David Clayton hits the short jumper in the paint to make it 7 to 3 Spartans.

But Auburn would come right back as Nick Stewart hits the three pointer and Auburn would cut the lead to 1 7 to 6.


Auburn would keep the game close in the first half with the outisde shot from T. J. Campbell.

William Byrd announced yesterday that Marcee Hufton is the Lady Terriers new head girls basketball coach.

Hufton is the Lady Terriers softball coach and attended high school at Byrd. She played hoops at the Vinton high school. She replaces Debbie Williams Arthur. Hufton was also a stand out college basketball player in the ODAC at Roanoke.
