One week ago tonight an explosion occurred in the basement of the New River Castings Plant killing Curtis Grooms and two women.

Investigators says they have now pinned down which gas most likely caused the blast and they plan to release that information sometime this week.
Officials are still working to determine if the company committed any federal regulatory violations.

Blacksburg police hope to know more about the death of a newborn found in a dumpster in the coming days.

Police discovered the newborn after attending to a woman at the same apartment complex who appeared to have given birth.

Governor Gilmore appears to be the only person remaining who can spare the life on Lonnie Weeks .. who is scheduled for execution later this week.

Weeks is a 27 year old North Carolina man, convicted for the shooting death of a police officer 7 years ago.

It was in 19-93 that Weeks was pulled over on Interstate 95 in Dale City.
A jury found him guilty of fatally shooting a Virginia State Trooper six times.
The Supreme Court stayed his execution last September .. but has since ruled it can go forward.
Only a clemency ruling from Governor Gilmore can stop the execution this time.

Former governor George Allen is making a statewide tour to kick off his candidacy.

Just last month Allen made a stop in Roanoke on behalf of the Bush Presidential campaign.
Today Allen started his campaigning in Abingdon.

Allen is a Republican, challenging Democrat Chuck Robb.

Lawmakers in West Virginia yesterday passed a proposed ban on same sex marriages.
The bill will allow marriage licenses to be issued only to couples consisting of a man and woman.
Governor Cecil Underwood says he opposes homosexual unions because he quote "doesn't see any other way".
Underwood says the bill is important because courts in other states have already addressed the issue.

Last week's fatal explosion in Radford isn't the first time the community has been rocked by a blast.
There have been many explosions at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant over the decades.

Both men were killed.
About 20 plant workers complained of such things as ringing in their ears, tension headaches and anxiety.
The blast left a crater in the ground. A barricade of wood and soil helped protect nearby buildings.

And so was born "Gunfighters and Trailblazers".. a game filled with 22- hundred bits of trivia about cowboys, Indians and folklore of the Old West.
It's not exactly a true board game.. players instead make their way across what looks like a rolled up map.

The game's been a good seller at tourist ranches and museum gift shops out west.

Dale Earnhardt made a trip to Victory Lane today winning the Cracker Barrel 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Dale Earnhardt, Junior led early in the race but he hits the wall and has to take his car to the pits. He overshot his area because he had no brakes.
Then Jeff Burton took over the lead but he apparently blew a tire and hit the wall while he was leading the race and Burton was through for the day.
Dale Earnhardt senior was coming on strong and he was running in second place behind his teammate Mike Skinner.
Dale Jarrett had some problems in the pits when he hit Stacy Compton Jarrettt was running 23-rd later in the race.


Skinner would lead over 100 laps and he crossed the line as the leader at the halfway point of the race.
Then Tony Stewart gets loose at the top of the track he slides into traffic and gets hit by Robert Pressley. Rusty Wallace and Stacy Compton also got together bringing out the caution.
Skinner was in control but his car blew an engine with just under 20 laps left in the race.
Earnhardt would lead on the re-start and he and Bobby Labonte would run side by side but Earnhardt crosses the line first by the nose of the car winning the Cracker Barrell 500.
