More cutbacks at Norfolk Southern.
Today the railroad laid off more than 4-hundred workers, including dozens in the Roanoke locomotive shop.

Jean,
It was just 3 months ago that Norfolk Southern laid off 550 union workers, 67 of those worked on the Virginia Rail lines and nine in Roanoke's Railroad yard.
Those layoffs came just days after the railroad announced an early retirement program for 12 hundred Non-union employees.
Railroad officials says this most recent move is another attempt to save money.

(( The recent layoffs include 471 employees company wide, 43 of them from the Roanoke locomotive shop.
Most of the employees worked in the mechanical department.
Railroad officials say a 61-percent increase in diesel fuel costs, a considerable decrease in export coal traffic, and competition with trucks and other carriers resulted in a loss of revenue.
Susan Terpay a Norfolk Southern Spokesperson told News 7, "It's a cost reduction move that we're making to match the size of the work force with the level of business we're doing right now."))
[Live=Joy Full/Newsroom]

Terpay does not know if this is a permanent move.
The laid -off workers were given 5 days of paid leave -- and April 14th is their official last day.
Norfolk Southern has been losing money since it and C-S-X split-up Conrail back in June.
