The 27 year old man was apparently climbing a pillar under Hales Ford Bridge around 6-30 last night.. when he lost his balance and fell into the 50 degree water.
His friend jumped in after him but was unable to save him and called for help.

Traffic is moving on Hardy Road this morning after a propane truck overturned there last night and closed part of the road.
The propane worried officials, but State Police say there was NO leak.

Fire officials would not permit us to get any closer to the scene than this, where all traffic on Hardy Road was turned around.

Police arrested Wolfe last summer.

Wythe County's longest-serving sheriff will be buried today.
Buford Eugene Shockley spent 24 years as sheriff, retiring in 1979. He died Friday at Wythe County Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at the Grubb Funeral Home chapel.

37-year old Dennis Lewis was formally charged with 13 felonies, including kidnapping, carjacking and assault.
His girlfriend, 20-year old Angel Tanner, is charged with the same crimes. She and Lewis are being held without bail in the New River Valley Regional Jail.
The couple surrendered Thursday night at the home of their hostages ... ending a two-day manhunt that started in Tennessee.
Both suspects still have to answer to criminal charges from the federal government and the state of Tennessee.
They're scheduled to be back in court May 17th.

The man shot by Roanoke police officer W.G. Boucher (Boo-shay) four months ago is now behind bars, after a long recovery.
Police say Wilbert Wesly Lewis failed to stop for Boucher last December .. after Boucher tried to pull him over for driving without his headlights. A chase ended with the shooting.
Lewis's injuries kept him from being arrested until now.

Fire officials would not permit us to get any closer to the scene than this, where all traffic on Hardy Road was turned around.
State police said several nearby homes were also evacuated.
The accident was cleared up at 11:30.

A 27 year old fisherman drowned in Smith Mountain Lake.
The man was apparently climbing a pillar under Hales Ford Bridge around 6-30 last night.. when he lost his balance and fell into the water.
Rescuers needed more than an hour to locate the man's body. Officials are not yet releasing the man's name.

The two fugitives captured in last week's standoff in Wythe County have appeared in court. 37-year old Dennis Lewis was formally charged with 13 felonies, including kidnapping, carjacking and assault.
His girlfriend, 20-year old Angel Tanner, is charged with the same crimes. She and Lewis are being held without bail in the New River Valley Regional Jail.

Hardy Road was closed last night near the Bay Rock Marina, at the Bedford-Franklin County line after a propane truck overturned.
The propane worried officials, but State Police say there was NO leak.
The accident was cleared up at 11:30 and Hardy Road is re-open this morning.
