Relieved that the attorney general promised no force would be used to retrieve 6-year old Elian Gonzalez, there was a sense of victory among the hundreds of protestors, now backed by star power. Actor Andy Garcia and singer Gloria Estefan were among several famous Cuban-Americans lending their support. Gloria Estefan, Singer, We don't understand why this family, who has been guarding this boy, is being compelled to betray his trust.
The Justice Department backed off the deadline set last night for the boy to be turned over to the INS, a clear retreat for attorney general Janet Reno. With the host family refusing to comply with her wishes and a supportive crowd growing by the hour, Reno was left with little choice. Janet Reno, Attorney General, we're not going to remove the boy by force. Reno promised only that efforts would continue to arrange a reunion between Elian and his father, who's been waiting and watching at a home in Bethesda. He'll probably be waiting a while longer, now that a federal appeals court has put everything on hold. The deaths of six children have led a company to remove its infant swings from the market.

Graco Children's products says six children have died after sliding out of the swing.
It apparently happened because the restraint systems were not used properly or parts were missing.
Seven million of the swings were sold from the 1970s until January of 1998.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the swings should not be used until parents get the new safety restraints offered by the company.
The new restraints assure the safety strap is always used, and the waist belt is buckled.
