A plane that was supposed to be on its way to Roanoke is missing tonight- and now a search is on.

Authorities say the small private plane was on its way from Nashville to Roanoke when it disappeared from radar just before noon today.
The Civil Air Patrol is conducting a search about three miles south of Norton- in far Southwest Virginia.
Five people were on board the flight-- two adults and three children.
The plane is a Mooney-twenty.

A freak accident in Bedford County this afternoon- involving a tree- Authorities say 40 year old Malcolm Charles Hargis of Bedford was killed.

State police say Hargis was driving this pickup truck- headed south on Route 221 near Goode when high winds apparently toppled a tree onto his vehicle.
Hargis was killed instantly.. his truck spun out and hit the guardrail.

A jury convicted a 35-year old Henry County man of murder tonight- for the shooting death of his 77 year old uncle.

A jury took three hours to find Darryl Law guilty of second degree murder-
Law shot Ernest Eggleston- also known as "Coon-tey" in the uncle's home- in front of Law's two aunts.
It happened on October 1st.
Jurors recommended a 25 year sentence- A judge will formally sentence Law in June.

Lynchburg's search for a new fire chief has come to an end.
Sources tell News7 that Cecil "Buddy" Martinette was offered and accepted the job today.
Martinette is a 23- year veteran of the Virginia Beach fire department, where he's been serving as a battalion chief.

Campbell County authorities marked the one- year anniversary of Columbine yesterday by dealing with two separate threats to schools there.
Authorities say a 15-year- old boy made an e-mail threat about shooting people at Rustburg Middle and Rustburg High School.
He's been charged with communicating a threat to damage persons or property.
And charges are pending against a 14-year- old boy who allegedly threatened to throw pipe bombs into William Campbell Middle School.

Roanoke will trade guns for gift certificates next month.
It's officially called a "buyback" program .. but if you turn in a gun, you get a gift certificate worth at least 50 dollars to Tanglewood Mall and nearby stores.

The search is on for a new president to head up the Roanoke Valley United Way.
Bob Kulinski announced today that he's leaving, to take a similar job in Akron, Ohio.
Kulinski has been president of the Roanoke charity for the past 15 years.
When he first came here, United Way contributions came to about 3-point-3 million dollars.
Now, the campaign brings in twice that amount.
Kulinski's new job starts in June.

The Saint Mary's College basketball coach that most us remember as a feisty guard during his playing days at UVa is a free man last night. Othell Wilson was acquitted yesterday of charges he kidnapped and raped his former girlfriend. Wilson spent most of Wednesday and Thursday on the witness stand denying the charges but admitting that he wrote a threatening letter to the 20 year old coed. After deliberating for two and hall hours yesterday the jury found Wilson not guilty. He had been on paid leave since his arrest last September.

This is third year the church has observed the tradition... and the first year women have been part of it.
The crucifixion provided a spectacle for many people passing by on the highway.
