Longtime Roanoke City Council member and civic leader Jim Trout has died.
Trout became ill last week at a council meeting, and he later underwent surgery to repair a tear in his aorta.
He died shortly before midnight at a Roanoke hospital.
Joe Dashiell has more on a political career that spanned more than 30 years.

Trout worked as an economic development specialist for the Norfolk Southern Corporation before his retirement, and he made economic development the cornerstone of his political career.
He was active in many civic organizations and projects. In 1965, he lead the effort to bring a Jupiter Rocket to Roanoke from Huntsville, Alabama. The rocket stood next to the Wasena Bridge for many years, and he watched in late December as it was moved to its new home beside the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

New River Castings has recalled about 80 workers to resume some work at the plant next month.

A spokesman for the Michigan company that owns the New River Castings plant said the company hopes to reopen its finishing department May 8th.
But the spokesman also said yesterday that no decision has been made on whether to rebuild the rest of the plant.

A gas explosion at the plant in March killed three workers.
A memorial service for the victims is set for Friday.

Doctor's found and repaired a tear in his aorta.
But they say he did not respond well to surgery.
He passed just before midnight.

The police and fire departments are also getting a piece of the pie. The police department is requesting School Resource Officers to be located in each of the five middle schools. The county plans to apply for a grant or will move its D.A.R.E officers into those positions.
The fire department hopes to lease two pumpers and two ladder trucks for it's departments in the county. More than 600 thousand dollars is being put toward replacing two of the vehicles.

Some big news for Volvo, it will soon be the world's second-largest heavy truck company.

Volvo announced yesterday that it's merging with Renault and Mack Trucks.
Volvo will take over Mack plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland and South Carolina.
Analysts say the move secures the company's future... but that the 23-hundred workers in Volvo's Dublin plant may NOT feel an impact.
Volvo's president says it's too soon to know how the merger will affect employment.
Shareholders are expected to approve the deal today.

Authorities combed the area on Cole street, bringing in a trained dog to search for clues.
Danville authorities are looking for a black male about six feet tall wearing all black.
Two other fatal shootings happened over the weekend in Martinsville.
