Three fire departments responded to Vinton Saw and Mower on Washington Avenue around nine tonight.

When fire fighters arrived heavy flames were coming from the maintenance portion of the building which is located in the middle.
Gas and oil containers posed a threat but firefighters were able to contain the fire in about 20 minutes.
The Fire Marshal is being called to the scene and will determine the cause.
No one was injured.

A Tennessee truck driver will spend a year in jail for taking his eyes off the interstate.

A Montgomery County judge convicted Richard Wayne West tonight of reckless driving on Interstate 81.
Last May, West told police he was looking around his truck cab for a drink when it crossed the median and killed an elderly Syracuse, New York couple.
He also has to pay a 25-hundred dollar fine.

Residents of Pittsylvania County will have a property tax increase of more than a dime.
By a four to three vote tonight, the board of supervisors approved a 93-million dollar budget that includes a 12-cent tax increase.
That would add about sixty dollars to the tax bill on a 50- thousand dollar home.
12 and a half million dollars will go to county schools-- that's a million and a half more than last year.

Officials say it was all because of a security breach.
An X-ray technician apparently noticed a suspicious package. Airport workers believed the piece of carry on luggage held a weapon, but after passengers were re-screened no weapon was found.

A four month investigation into the place revealed a staff member hit a student -- he was later fired.
Inspectors say the school is unsafe and unsupervised.

State inspectors could find no record that kids received their medicine.
School leaders say they are fixing problems and will appeal to get their license.
They say all 15 kids will be picked up this week.

The New River Health District has confirmed another case of meningococcal bacteria on a college campus. A 20-year old Virginia Tech student got sick April 22nd and was taken to Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was later transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center where he was released yesterday. Three Radford University students contracted meningitis last month. The New River Health District Director says four cases this time of year is NOT unusual.

Roanoke College swept away the competition in ODAC this year and tonight the team sweeps the top postseason honors in the league. Senior third baseman Kari Whitney, who hit a league best 508 this year was named player of the year. Her coach Alan Bayse is coach of the year in the ODAC. His team is currently 36-and-3 and on its way to a second NCAA appearance.

11 different state champions will be crowned in the third annual Spring Jubilee.
The two day event marks the end of the Group Two A and Group A spring sports' seasons.

An abandoned magpie nest 15 feet above the ground has become the home of a litter of six kittens.
The owners said they searched high and low when their pregnant cat went into seclusion... they just didn't realize how high that was.
