"Except for the initial miscommunication between the student and the school administration, which could have been resolved without the help of the ACLU, there was, and has been nothing to report. But what about the angry citizens of Floyd that could be produced to give credence to this media attention? It is my contention that if you beat the bushes hard enough, and if you use enough inflammatory language, you will be successful in finding people with opinions on controversial issues. Instead of trying to defuse a controversy they help to create, the local news media fanned the flames of discontent while standing gleefully by ready to film whomever it consumed."
Another viewer [Brad Warstler, Floyd] wrote:
"It seems to me that if you were going to do a piece about the same sex couple going to the senior prom at Floyd County High School you would interview people on both sides of the issue rather than just one interview with one narrow-minded county supervisor...There are plenty of folks up here in Floyd who applaud Ms. Lapine for her courage and who have no fear that the free world will collapse if she and her date go to the prom."
