The question many are asking tonight- why was a controlled fire started in the first place- and how did it get so out of control-

A fire INTENTIONALLY set to PREVENT a threat, has become the threat itself. SEN.PETE DOMENICI, R-NM: Somebody made a mistake and we have to find out who did it. BURNING HOUSE
The National Parks Service says it wanted to burn dry brush away - what it did was burn homes away - more than 300 damaged - at least a hundred 1ost - and the fire is not contained yet.

More than 18-thousand acres has been blackened since last week --
15.--- most of it in the last 12 hours.

The fires have threatend the Los Alamos nuclear laboratory but officials say potentially deadly stores of plutonium are protected in fire proof bunkers.
Mother nature has refused to cooperate. The tinder dry conditions are fueling the flames, fanned by winds in excess of 50 miles an hour - making aerial assaults difficult at best. FIREFIGHTER: We are just trying to get things to acceptable levels because as we are doing that..another five houses will start to burn.
And its not just the wind thats frustrating firefighters - its the lack of water. Trucks have brought more in - but for many homes it was too little, too late. LEE COWAN ON CAM: With winds expected to stay strong for the better part of the evening an extra 3-thousand residents have been asked to leave that's in a town ten miles away from here. An indication of how fierce this fire has gotten. ))

Closer to home and on a much smaller scale, a brush fire burned about 15 acres of land in Pulaski County this afternoon.
The fire started around noon in the area around Mount Olivet Road.
Crews were able to bring it under control in about three hours.
A state forestry official says it appears it was started by an abandoned campfire.
