Mike Stevens joins us now with more on the life of Adam Petty.
[ANCHOR=MIKE]
[GRAPHIC=ADAM PETTY]

When Adam Petty arrived on the racing scene two years ago, he already had the Petty genes and the the family's trademark grin. But unlike so many newcomers to the sport - Adam had a mannerly, respectful way about him. Shortly after noon today he crashed during a practice run at Loudon, New Hampshire and died at a nearby hospital.

(( Most 19 year olds think they are invincible - but NOT Adam Petty. This past Monday when the fourth generation driver in the Petty clan pulled into Charlotte for an open test session, he took a few moments to talk to us about his efforts to make the Memorial Day Coca-Cola 600. He wasn't making bold predicitions, just expressing his humble hopes. ((ADAM PETTY:)) He had come to Loudon, New Hampshire to attempt to earn a top starting spot in this weekend's Busch series race when he hit the wall during practice. Rescue workers had to cut him out his car and airlift him to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead of head trauma. Video after the wreck indicates that Petty's car hit the outside wall more than ten times before it finally came to rest. Adam Petty was proud of the fact that he was the only four generation professional athlete in any sport. And he proud that his great grand father Lee was able to see him race in the big leagues before he himself passed away earlier this year. Adam was expected to lead Petty Enterprises' effort in racing for at least the next 20 years. In January of 1999, he began racing full-time on the Busch Grand national Series and immediately made him mark with a tpo 10 finish at Daytona that year. The biggest victory of his short career came in September of 1998 when he won the ARCA series' Easy Care 100 at Charlotte.))

In Los Alamos - frustration turned to realization as residents began to learn which of their homes were spared, and which were lost.

Although no more homes are in danger from the flames - New Mexico is still in trouble.

200 miles to the south the nightmare worsened. Overnight, a one hundred acre blaze exploded to 20-thousand acres - forcing another series of evacuations in a weary fire ridden state.

SOT/JIM PAXON

Its growing at an alarming rate.
Four separate fires have burned nearly 60-thousand acres- costing upwards of 1 billion dollars in damages. 24-hundred firefighters are on the ground and in the air.
For the first time in days, the weather improved. Winds calmed - temperatures dropped - humidity rose - but the fire is still in charge. JOHN PETERSON, FIREFIGHTER Right now we have zero percent containment, that means we have no effective line thats holding that fire.
In all, flames have destroyed 260 homes - the grim list of addresses was posted informing residents who was lucky, and who wasnt.
Some 25 thousand of them remain evacuated, and most wont be able to return for at least another week. CAPT. ROBERT REPASS, LOS ALAMOS POLICE Be patient - lot of big problems out there.))
