5 people were saved from a burning home thanks to the alertness of an off duty Danville police officer.

Around 1-15, the police officer noticed smoke coming out of a house on Chestnut Street. He knocked on the door.
But when he did not get a response, the officer kicked in the door. It woke up the 5 residents inside, and they made it out safely. Authorities say there was extensive damage to the house.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Officials are continuing to battle the blaze that has consumed more than 80 acres just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Authorities suspect mother nature is to blame for starting the fire.

It was detected Saturday after a thunderstorm rolled through the area.
A storm that included lightning but little rain.
Right now-- authorities say the blaze is about 50- to 60- percent contained with crews from the U-S Forest and Park Service... as well as Division of Forestry all pitching in.

Firefighters battled flames for much of yesterday afternoon and evening along Draft Road ... that's off Craig Creek Road in the Eagle Rock area.

The two men who escaped from a prison in nearby West Virginia are back in custody.
The two broke out of the Denmar Correctional Center in Pochahontas County early Saturday. They were arrested at a motel in Maine yesterday, after police traced a phone call one of them made.

A collision between a car and tractor- trailer blocked traffic for a while yesterday on Interstate 81.

The accident backed up northbound traffic for two miles, from I-581 back toward Salem.
State police say a tractor trailer clipped the car while changing lanes, then pushed the auto ahead.
Two women were in the car. Both were released after hospital treatment. The truck driver has been charged with improper lane change.
