Governor Jim Gilmore has vetoed a seven million dollar emergency health insurance plan for laid off textile workers in Southside.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Richmond/Yesterday; ]

The Governor called emergency health insurance for laid off textile workers "extreme and damaging."
Gilmore said quote: "How can we explain to identical un-employed persons in every other area or industry why Martinsville textile workers get a generous benefit and they get nothing?"
The Governor says if all jobless workers statewide got insurance coverage from the state, it could cost up to 364 million dollars a year.
He goes on to say that lawmakers' voting against HIS less generous insurance plan and substituting their own was an effort to mislead Martinsville workers into thinking their governor does NOT care about them.

It looks like Roanoke really might get passenger train service to Richmond and Washington. The U-S House of Representatives passed a bill today that FORCES Amtrak to provide passenger trains for Western Virginia. Congressmen Bob Goodlatte and Rick Boucher say Norfolk Southern MUST let Amtrak use its tracks -- as soon as the state pays for maintenance. Virginia has ten million dollars to spend on track and signal improvements.

[VO] The trains would run from Bristol through the New River Valley, Roanoke, Bedford and Lynchburg. The Senate must still vote on the bill.
