Authorities say the tenant, 27-year-old Darren Womack, was found shot to death in the front yard.
They say the landlord, 65-year-old James Compton, was severely beaten.
He was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Sources say the two men had been involved in an ongoing dispute.
The sheriff says he has to investigate further before he can release their names AND details on how the dispute escalated to death.

Long- time Lynchburg city manager Charles Church is stepping down this summer to do battle with terminal prostate cancer.

Church underwent surgery in 1996, but learned recently the cancer had returned and was incurable.
Flanked by city council and other employees, he announced today he was resigning effective August 1st to spend more time with his family.
Church came to Lynchburg from the city of Danville in 1991.. Mayor Pete Warren credited Church with putting Lynchburg on a strong financial footing and creating a more "customer- friendly" city government.

Flags are flying at half staff in Henry County in honor of the late Jack Dalton.
The Chairman of the Board of Supervisors died of cancer this morning at the age of 72.
Dalton served on the board for 25 years.

Their fun is part of a larger effort to restore Lick Run, the creek that meanders through the area. Several partners including the City of Roanoke, the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Western Virginia Land Trust are working together on the project, and teacher Connie Goehle says the lessons aren't lost on her students.

A Virginia Tech student was killed this morning when his motorcycle hit a car.
Police say 22- year old Christopher William Taylor was traveling North on South Main Street in Blacksburg when his bike collided with a station wagon.
A Christiansburg man was killed in an unrelated accident yesterday on Rock Road in Radford.
The man's name has NOT been released.
Authorities in Covington are also investigating a fatal accident.
67- year old James Henry Noel died yesterday after pulling into the path of a tractor trailer.

A former athletic trainer and teacher's aide in Radford City Schools was found guilty today of sexual relations with two students.
43-year-old Cotton Lee Easter was convicted on five felony counts of carnal knowledge of a child and one misdemeanor count of sexual battery.
