First, Norfolk Southern. N-S will layoff 228 East End Shop workers by August. The furloughs come after months of declining coal exports.

A member of the Roanoke County school board is offering a new redistricting plan.
Construction of the south county high school has led to controversy over attendance zones, and tonight Bill Irvin released a proposal he hopes will win school board approval.
His plan would send students from Hidden Valley Junior High to the existing high school, and students at Cave Spring Junior to the NEW high school. The plan would not affect the elementary feeder schools, with the exception of Cave Spring Elementary. Students who live near the new high school would have the option of attending Cave Spring Middle.

The plan will be distributed to parents, and a public hearing is scheduled June 20th.

The nightmare at a daycare center is over for children and their parents in Luxemborg... thanks to a risky plan and a weapon disguised as a video camera.

Several children were held hostage for 29-hours by a man brandishing a gun and a grenade.
Today authorities lured the gunman outdoors - promising they would provide a video camera for him to tell his story.
But the camera disguised a gun - the suspect, surrounded by hostages, was shot twice at close range.
He was flown to a hospital. He's in critical condition.

A man who tried to kill his family pled guilty to reduced charges - then his wife defended him.

Former Roanoke County firefighter Phillip Casteel admits he tried to kill his wife and children in January by cutting the brake cables on the family van.
Kimberly Casteel was able to stop the car in the driveway.
Today she convinced the judge to let her husband stay out of jail until he's sentenced.

Bank officials say the conversion of customer accounts has been a bit slow - causing delays with the posting of deposits and other transactions.
This has caused problems with getting up to date account information -- leaving customers without access to all of their funds.

Check out the pictures as the Southern crater erupted this morning. After five hours of tremors, Mount Etna spewed lava and sent up a mile high column of ash and smoke.
People could see the volcano from nearby coastal towns.
Scientists say the explosion doesn't cause a danger to people living nearby.
Etna's last major eruption was in 1992 but minor eruptions occur every few months.
