State police say one person was killed in a single-vehicle accident state route 122, a few miles north of Liberty High School.

A Norfolk- Southern coal train derailed today in Roanoke.
The 105-car train was headed for a power plant in Pennsylvania. Three locomotives and two cars jumped the tracks.
No coal spilled from any of the cars, although 70 or 80 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from two of the locomotives.
No word on the cause.

A former Christiansburg police officer convicted today of fondling a 13-year-old girl will have to register as a sex offender.

Terry Calvin Buchanan pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual battery of the girl, who was a neighbor.
She went to authorities last year and showed them bruises resulting from an encounter in Buchanan's car.
Buchanan left the police department after an internal investigation.
The judge gave him a suspended five year sentence.
He'll serve no time if he registers as a sex offender and completes a sex offender treatment program.

The federal government has proposed suspending Alaska Airlines' authority to conduct major repair work on its fleet.

The building was destroyed because officials say the structure was unsafe.
Twelve of the 14 floors of Ocean Tower One were complete when fire
broke out on April 6th.
The fire caused the luxury condo to be unsound.
With hurricane season here it was determined the building was a threat to safety so it was ordered demolished.
