Soaring temperatures today forced some southside public schools to shut down early.

Students from Schoolfield Elementary School and the rest of Danville city schools went home around one this afternoon.
Pittsylvania and Henry County schools also got to go home early on a staggered schedule to allow buses to take the kids home.
There was some confusion about the early dismissal because the decision to close early was made this morning instead of last night.

A former Christiansburg police officer was convicted today of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl.

Terry Calvin Buchanan (BYOO cannon) pled guilty to aggravated sexual battery of the girl, who was a neighbor.
She said he fondled her in his car last year.
Buchanan left the police department after an internal investigation in December.
The judge gave him a suspended five- year sentence.
He'll serve no time if he registers as a sex offender and completes a sex offender treatment program.

The first five pieces of a Norfolk- Southern coal train derailed in Roanoke this afternoon.

The 105-car train was headed for a power plant in York Haven, Pennsylvania. Three locomotives and two cars jumped the tracks.
They all remained more or less upright, at about a 30-degree tilt. The coal was contained. About 70 or 80 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from two of the locomotives.
The accident happened within the yard, so there were no traffic tie-ups as a result.
No word on a cause of the derailment.

Hoechst Celanese has settled its differences with the E-P-A, but Celco will have to pay the government 300-thousand dollars to make it happen.

The feds alleged the Celanese plant was violating the Clean Air Act by releasing benzene.

The wife of former Wythe County sheriff Wayne Pike has filed an 800-thousand dollar federal lawsuit against Incumbent Sheriff Kermit Osborne.
Martha Pike- -a dispatcher in the Sheriff's Office- -actively campaigned, first for Jeff Pike's nomination, and then for her husband's election in the Fall.
Wayne Pike had hired Martha in 1996, when he was still sheriff. He married her after resigning to serve on the state parole board.
Osborne won the election and fired Mrs. Pike five weeks later. She claims that's a violation of her right to due process and free speech.
