Well a new study from Duke University shows people who need a heart by-pass do much better when surgeons use a newer technique. It's one where they operate on the heart while it's still beating. It's a really tough surgery to do trying to sew new blood vessels onto a beating heart. The way we usually do it is to stop the heart and put the patient on what's called an artificial heart/lung machine and then do the sewing. But the study finds recovery using the newer technique where you dont stop the heart is much easier on the patient, who usually recovers up to 5 times more quickly than with the conventional technique. There's also fewer compilations.
