((The race to write what some call "the book of life" crossed the finish line at the White House -- a handshake signalling an announcement the President called humbling. Today we are learning the language in which God created life.
Five years ahead of schedule it is the work of more than a thousand scientists across six nations -- trying to be the first to de-code the body's secret instruction book.
The map is a blueprint of which genes do what -- a discovery that will revolutionize medicine in ways most can't imagine. CRAIG VENTER, CELERA GENOMICS: There's at least the potential to reduce the number of cancer deaths to zero during our lifetimes.
And that's jut one example.
THE GENETIC CODE IS LOCKED INSIDE CELLS... WITHIN EACH CELL ARE CHROMOSOMES MADE UP OF STRINGS OF D-N-A... WHICH IN TURN ARE MADE UP OF FOUR CHEMICALS -- GIVEN THE LETTERS A, C, T, AND G -- THE STAGGERING COMBINATION OF THOSE 3 BILLION INGREDIENTS MAKES UP THE RECEIPE OF LIFE -- AND SCIENTISTS NOW KNOW 90 PERCENT OF IT.
But it means along with all the positive traits, the map can also reveal a person's every genetic glitch. And while that may cure diseases, it may also cause some to lose their insurance -- even their jobs. FRANCIS COLLINS/NIH: We need the effective protections in place to prevent that kind of thing from happeneing. Democrats in both the House and Senate have proposed anti-genetic discrimination laws but they have been stalled for years. Without those protections many may not USE the new technology, meaning gene medicine goes nowhere. Lee Cowan, CBS News, Washington.))

uy at the beach who sucks his gut in when he sees a nice young lady or something like that." Some of you slipped right past the "Hero of the Beach" part. Dr Roger Shewmake "Some of us don't see ourselves as overweight or we see ourselves as thin when we're not." If you're not, beer isn't to blame. Fat beer has 160 calories. Go for the skinny stuff and you shave off another 60. Dr Roger Shewmake "Alcohol can contribute to it, but it's not a primary cause of what we call a beer belly." "There's a lot of people with what we call beer bellies or beer guts that don't consume alcohol." One reason behind the roll may be that when men belt down the beer, they're often washing down plenty of fatty foods with it. Another is that alcohol effects that way the body stores calories as fat. And then there are genetics. Dr Roger Shewmake "Some people are just not gonna have those six-pack abdominal muscles." Even if you're relatively thin everywhere else, that doesn't mean you should just let it all hang out. Dr Roger Shewmake "Those people who have fat around their hips and all, are actually probably a lot safer than those that have it around their abdomen." Did I mention how much I like this guy? Dr Roger Shewmake "That central fat is probably a higher risk for certain diseases, such as problems with the heart." It may not be responsible for your belly, but there is a bad side to beer. Alcohol can actually increase your blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol levels, putting you at higher risk for a stroke and diabetes. Actually beer has fewer calories than hard liquor-a mixed drink, for example, has about 200 calories. Wine has the least--about 80 calories a glass. But we tend to drink less of those than we do beer. )
