Pittsylvania County authorities are investigating the murder of a prominent figure in the tobacco business.

44 year old David Whitehead Hutcherson is charged with killing his 60 year old uncle, John Whitehead Motley.
The victim is well- known in the tobacco industry in Danville and Pittsylvania County.

Authorities found Motley on his property yesterday afternoon, shot in the chest.
Hutcherson appeared in court this morning for his arraignment.

A Wytheville man who plead guilty to beating another man to death will spend 40 years in prison.

23-year-old Jason Wolfe was arrested in August for the first-degree murder of 24-year-old Michael Alderman.
Police say Wolfe caught Alderman in bed with his then girlfriend and killed him with several blows to the head.
In court today, he told the judge that, despite the murder, his marriage is the best it's ever been.

At a press conference today, Chief Neal Morris says the alleged drug dealers sold narcotics to undercover officers during the five month investigaiton.
A total of 40 people have been charged with drug violations. By catching half of those violators, officers say they are sending a strong message.

After years of debate, two vetoes from George Allen, and some accident horror stories, kids under age 16 are NO longer allowed in the beds of pickup trucks.
Adults learning to drive can only take the license test three times in three months... and must either go to driving school or hold a learners permit for 30 days.
First time drunk drivers with blood alcohol levels of point-2-0 or higher will spend at least five days in jail... mandatory.
After all, that's more than twice the legal limit.
For subsequent D-U-I convictions, the penalties are also increased.
Voter registrars are now allowed to set up in D-M-V offices to get you to fill out absentee ballots.
And finally, don't get too cute with your license plate.
Holders, covers, and tow hitches must NOT obscure the readability of your license plate.
It's the law July first.

Hampton Roads hockey coach John Brophy is in critical but stable condition tonight. Brophy was involved a serious automobile accident early Sunday morning in Nova Scotia, Canada. Today investigators said it appears that Brophy fell asleep at the wheel. They do not believe alcohol had anything to do with the crash, but police say Brophy was not wearing his seat belt.
