A Dublin woman is behind bars tonight, charged with a fatal shooting.

Authorities say it started as an altercation between the two women at this home in the Lillydell Section of Pulaski County.
26 year -old Sherry Lisa Cressell has been charged with 2nd degree murder.
A family member of Cressell says the two women had been friends for a while.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the victim at this time. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3 A.M.

The pair crashed on Shenandoah Avenue in Roanoke around eleven P-M.
Police say it appears the motorcycle was traveling Eastbound when a car in front of it stopped to turn into the Shenandoah Restaurant.
Police say it looks like the motorcycle swerved to avoid hitting the car.
The female was ejected and struck a light pole.
The male driver and the motorcycle were thrown in a different direction.

Another motorcycle accident this afternoon .. this one on the Blue Ridge Parkway in near the Floyd-Franklin County line.
A man was airlifted to Roanoke for treatment of multiple injuries.
Reports from the scene indicate he was aboard one of three motorcycles riding together near the Devils's backbone.
No word yet on the cause ... or the victim's identity or condition.

Cook beat-out 25 other contestants from across the state for the title. And Cook says as part of her Miss Virginia 2-thousand platform she plans to educate people about court appointed special advocates who represent abused and neglected children.

But for right now Cook says she's just try to enjoy all the perks that come with the title. For one year -- she'll drive this brand new mercury cougar --and have an apartment in the Roanoke area rent free -- not mention a 16-thousand dollar scholarship.
But this may be just the beginning for Jacqueline Cook. She's headed to Atlantic City to compete for the title of Miss America in October.

The Highland County Sheriff's office is investigating the death of a Richmond-area man found today in the county's gorge area.
Investigators identify him as 48 year old Harold (Bows) Bowes of Mechanicsville.
His body has been sent to the state medical examiner for further investigation. Highland County authorities are not yet releasing further information.

Pittsylvania County's jail has a major overcrowding problem ... one of the worst in Virginia.
State figures show the jail was the third most crowded in 19-98 ... operating at 270 per cent of capacity.
Pittsylvania County officials are preparing a preliminary report for Supervisors to consider. Options would include building a new jail, expanding the present one, or doing nothing.

A former candidate for mayor [Duane Howard] wrote: The City should take the police officers off the mounted patrol unit and assign them full time to this troubled neighborhood until the problem is solved. Five policemen are being used for a public relations promotion that does nothing to enhance police protection in neighborhoods where it is needed.
Another viewer [Jim Fralin] had praise for a story on legal shooting.
I just wanted to thank you for having the guts to not only air a segment on the shooting sports but to do it in a positive way. Keep up the good work. There are more "sports" in the Roanoke Valley than football, baseball and basketball.
