State police put their latest tool for catching speeding motorists to work, this morning.
The hope is that by monitoring the interstate from above-- troopers will be able to spot the more aggressive drivers.

A state trooper rides inside the plane where he uses VASCAR to monitor motorists below.
VASCAR is a time and distance computer that clocks a vehicle's average speed between lines on the road below.
The state trooper then radios the information to an officer waiting on the ground below. NAT SOUND

So far, this year, 12 people have been killed on Interstate 81 and state police say in most instances speed was a factor.

The Lightnin plant in Fairview Industrial Park is set to close by the end of the year.
Lightnin has made equipment used to treat water and manufacture drugs for more than two decades.

26-year-old Sherry Lisa Cressell second-degree murder and felony firearms charges.

The county prosecutor says he expects her to be arraigned Wednesday morning.

A weekend motorcycle accident in Roanoke has taken a deadly turn.

A woman aboard the cycle died today. Roanoke police have not yet released her name.
She was a passenger as the motorcycle headed east on Shenandoah Avenue late Saturday night.
Police say it swerved to avoid a car stopped in front. The victim was thrown from the motorcycle and hit a light pole.
The man driving the cycle was also injured. No word on his name or condition.

Investigators say the pilot of a small plane that crashed in Augusta County last year probably suffered a heart attack.

The twin engine piper went down near the community of Deerfield last July. The pilot, Dr. Brian Hawley of Forest City, Arkansas, was the only person on board.
The National Transportation Safety Board found that the airplane had been on a continuous maintenance program, and the wreckage indicated the plane was under power at the time of the impact.
An autopsy wasn't possible, but the NTSB reports the pilot's father, two uncles and a male cousin had all suffered fatal heart attacks.

The Washington Redskins may find their new training camp plans to be more trouble than they expected when fans start arriving in Ashburn later this month.

The Redskins plan to charge all fans 13 years of age and older $10 a piece to watch the team practice. They also plan to charge $10 a car to park. The NFL bylaws say it's OK to charge these fees, but if a team charges admission for a practice or scrimmage any other NFL team is allowed to not only watch, but also videotape the workout as long the representatives from that team pay to get in the gate. Scouts are not allowed to watch practices that are open to the public and free.

A controversial plan to switch four elementary school principals will come up for debate again at tonight's Lynchburg school board meeting.

The plan rotates the heads of Kizer, Perrymont, Linkhorne and Dearington Elementary schools.
The principals were notified of the changes two weeks ago, but outraged parents say they never had a chance to voice their opinion about the move.
More than a hundred parents and students turned out last week to let the school board know how they felt.
Most were upset that their children would be losing principals they had gotten to know and trust.
