((A story last week on shootings at homes in the Lafayette Boulevard area brought two responses, including one from the community leader [Jeff Artist] who has raised the issue of gang activity in Roanoke.
I deeply appreciate the coverage your station gave my neighborhood...Your station presented the facts, showed concern and did not try to exploit the differences between Chief Gaskins and myself...I would also like to express my appreciation to the many policemen who have shown true concern...Many times, the policemen on the beat don't get the credit they so richly deserve.
A former candidate for mayor [Duane Howard] wrote: The City should take the police officers off the mounted patrol unit and assign them full time to this troubled neighborhood until the problem is solved. Five policemen are being used for a public relations promotion that does nothing to enhance police protection in neighborhoods where it is needed.
Another viewer [Jim Fralin] had praise for a story on legal shooting.
I just wanted to thank you for having the guts to not only air a segment on the shooting sports but to do it in a positive way. Keep up the good work. There are more "sports" in the Roanoke Valley than football, baseball and basketball.
