After weeks of outrage from drivers over the skyrocketing gasoline prices-the cost at the pump is visibly lower today.
In the Midwest where the asking price for a gallon of gasoline WAS well over two dollars for regular-its now in the dollar-80, dollar-90 range and slowly falling.

(SOT RUSSELL HOING/MOTORIST )

I THINK THEY OVERDO IT WHEN THEY RAISE THESE PRICES AND THEN COMING DOWN, IT ALWAYS TAKES LONGER TO COME DOWN THAN IT SHOULD HAVE.
OPEC blamed the high price tag on limited supply. Some refiners pointed the finger at the increased cost of producing cleaner fuel.

(SOT mike reo/motorist )

I JUST THINK THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE GOOD ECONOMY AT THIS TIME AND THEY FIGURED IT WAS THE RIGHT TIME TO DO THAT.
While gasoline prices this summer have made consumers hot under the collar, theyre bound to get a chill when they open up their heating oil and natural gas bills this winter.

(SOT JOHN FELMY/AMERICAN PETROLEUM INSTITUTE )

IT MAY BE AN UNPLEASANT SURPRISE BECAUSE WHOLESALE PRICES FOR FUEL OIL ARE UP ABOUT 75 PERCENT OVER THE PAST YEAR.
John Felmy says the problem wouldnt be as severe if more petroleum used for heating were produced in the United States.

(SOT FELMY )

BECAUSE WE IMPORT 55 PERCENT OF OUR PETROLEUM NEEDS FROM ABROAD, WE ARE BASICALLY HELD HOSTAGE TO WORLD SUPPLY AND DEMAND CONDITIONS, SO WHATEVER THE WORLD PRICE IS WE HAVE TO PAY IT.

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/CBS NEWS)

THE HIGH GASOLINE PRICES THIS SUMMER HAVE LED TO FEDERAL INQUIRIES AND CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS-WE COULD SEE THE SAME THIS WINTER OVER THE COST OF HOME HEATING OIL AND NATURAL GAS. DREW LEVINSON, CBS NEWS, DETROIT.
