A recovery operation is underway for a 13 year old boy who apparently drowned in the New River.

Shortly after 5 this evening rescue crews began searching the New River near the Peppers Ferry Bridge in Pulaski County.
Officials believe the 13 year old was swept under by the current.
Kate Weidaw was at the scene tonight and has the details.

When Deputy Seth Chamberline arrived on the scene he jumped in and took one of the females to the shore and then went after a bystander who had gone in to help but wound up needing help himself. The second female made it to shore by herself. All three were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
In the meantime Lifeguard ten helped out in the search by flying over the river and 18 divers from Pulaski and Giles Counties and Christiansburg searched through the water for the 13 year old but have so far been unsuccessful.

Good news for one Roanoke neighborhood could be bad news for another... as the planning for Interstate 73 moves forward.

A final decision on the route of the proposed highway won't come until early next year.
But the Virginia Department of Transportation says it is adjusting one of the alternatives that would have taken the road through the Riverland neighborhood.
That news is a relief to Riverland residents, but also raises the prospect that southeast roanoke or another section of the city will be affected.

The tobacco industry deceived smokers now its facing 145 billion dollars in punitive damages- If big tobacco has to actually pay that amount, tobacco farmers will be among those on the loosing end.
Farmers say their livelihood is already more uncertain than the generation before them, and the uncertainty is growing everyday.

A fatal shooting at a Roanoke night club has landed a teenager in jail for a 15-year sentence.
Tremaine Richardson was sentenced this morning for the murder of Prentice Jordan.

The 16-year-old had also agreed to testify against Timothy Buford, the other young man charged in the murder at Easley's last year.

That's why she appeared in the Roanoke Circuit Court today.

The 37-year-old Glenvar native entered a no contest plea to a charge of practicing without a license.
Prosecutors dropped the other count she was facing.

Some Virginia Tech students are trying to break a world record this week with their human-powered submarine.

The engineering students spent more than two years designing and building the 9-by-2 foot submarine.
It's pedaled underwater by a driver who breathes using an air tank.

To break the world record, it will have to go more than 7 knots -- or 8 miles per hour -- and beat 12 competitors to the finish line.
