A bee attack that killed a goat in Alleghany County was the work of killer bees.

Bee experts at Virginia Tech confirmed the first case of Africanized bees in the state with the help of the U-S Department of Agriculture.

The bees swarmed and killed a goat on a Low Moor farm -- then turned on his owner, James Downey, two weeks ago.

Experts believe the bees were a recent arrival in Low Moor.

Experts say they think THIS was an isolated case.
But they've made traps for the bees and will continue to monitor the area for other colonies.

A Martinsville man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for his role in a convenience store killing and robbery last year.

A judge handed down the sentence yesterday. William LeMaine Murphy was found guilty earlier this year of accessory after the fact to murder and receiving stolen property.
Murphy and another defendant say they were in the getaway car when the murder happened.
Michael Anthony Ramey is accused of killing one store clerk and injuring two others at Taylors Little Grocery in Axton.
His trial is set for October.

20 people have been indicted on charges of the manufacture and distribution of moonshine.
The indictments stem from investigations by "Operation Lightning Strike" and charge three specific moonshine operations in Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania - including one in Franklin County.

The indictment alleges between 19-85 and May of last year, Farmers Exchange country supply store in Rocky Mount supplied moonshine operations with sugar, jugs and other equipment used to make the liquor.
