((This isn't the first time that Hezbollah sympathizers have been accused of raising money in the U.S. for the terrorist organization....but it certainly must rank as one of the more unusual. Eighteen homes were raided and 18 suspects arrested as federal agents searched for evidence of what they said was a giant cigarette smuggling scheme.
Essentially cigarettes were being bought in North Carolina where the tax is low...shipped to Michigan where it's high, and resold. The resulting profit was being used to ship cash and goods back to the Hezbollah in Lebanon.

"Even a small or medium van could reap a profit of $8,0000 to $10,000 a trip."
Fresh off its triumphal reentry into South Lebannon.....sources say the Hezbollah reaped as much as $1 million from the scheme...as well as electronic equipment including computers and cameras. But there is no
evidence they planned to strike here.
Mark Calloway, U.S. Attorney
"The affidavit, which was unsealed in court, does not allege - does not allege - any evidence that these defendants have engaged in any act or terrorism or any act of violence."
Investigators say they are curious about several trips to the Northwest that one member of the group took last year....but that so far there are no indications the trips had anything to do with terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden's aborted attempt to sneak a bomb team into Seattle last December.))
