An Air France Concorde has crashed today near Paris. Firefighters say the plane crashed shortly after takeoff.

The plane was reportedly headed for New York, with about 100 people on board. Many of the passengers were believed to be German tourists. A witness tells the network that he saw flames from an engine, and that the plane was struggling to gain altitude. He says it rolled, and turned almost upside down, before crashing in a huge fireball. This was the first crash of one of the supersonic jets.

(( Dick Cheney left his Dallas home this morning to renew his life in politics. George W. Bush will end weeks of speculation this afternoon as he announces Cheney as his running mate. Bush talked yesterday with CBS News correspondent Dan Rather about the selection process.

(SOT, GEORGE W. BUSH, YESTERDAY)

Republican sources tell CBS news Bush called Cheney this morning offering the job and Cheney accepted. Cheney ironically headed the Texas Governors vice president selection team and just recently surfaced on the short list. Cheney brings to the ticket a history rich in political experience. He served as Secretary of Defense for President Bush during the Gulf War, was a US congressman from Wyoming, his home state for several terms and under President Gerald Ford.. at age 34 he was youngest chief of staff to serve in the White House. Not long ago, Cheney said he would never re-enter politics, however friends say he is extremely loyal and his close relationship with the Bushs probably influenced his decision to jump back into the battle.
