As investigators continued their search for answers the one clue they
were hoping would surface finally did... a video tape of the Concorde's
final moments. It shows what witnesses told investigators all along,
huge tongues of fire shooting out of the back of the left engine pod.
That's significant because only moments before take off maintainence
workers discovered the thrust-reverser on the Concorde's number 2 engine
wasn't working.
It's used mainly as a braking tool, the plane can fly without it's
thrust-reverser, but the pilot refused to push off the gate until
workers repaired it using a part from a backup Concorde.
But 2 minutes after takeoff, this is watch air traffic controllers saw
from the tower, those same engines bursting into flames another red flag
for investigators who are already leaning toward mechanical failure as a
a cause of Tuesday's crash.
sot: Paul Beaver/Aviation Expert
Perhaps that maintenance work was not adequate.
Perhaps that maintenance
works should have not been done and it
should have instead have been an engine change.
Because of the fire investigators say the jet didn't have enough thrust
to
continue its climb and want to examine the congfiguration of the
Concorde's engines to see if the pilot could have helped the situation.
