Danville Police are looking for a man they consider armed and dangerous.
David Lee Hicks is a fugitive from North Carolina, but he was last seen in Danville and authorities believe he could still be in the area.
U-S Marshalls, Danville Police and at least six North Carolina law enforcement agencies are searching for Hicks.
Authorities say he stole an officers gun, escaped from police and kidnapped a North Carolina woman apparently at random last night.
Hicks was last seen on West Main Street in Danville.

The FBI says Aaron (Ko-me) Commey walked around a security check point with the gun- and ran 40 feet down a gangway onto the plane.

The Presidential inauguration in Peru did not spark street parties.. but instead.. street battles.
Demonstrators set fire to a fence near the presidential palace.
Firefighters hosed down the flames and police used tear gas to try and keep the peace.
About 35 people have been hurt in clashes between protestors and police.
The demonstrators are protesting the inauguration of President Alberto Fujimori to an unprecedented third term.

Palestinian Leader Yassar Arafat met today with a European Special Envoy to the Middle East.
President Clinton is warning the Palestinians that it would be a big mistate to give up on talks and declare a state unilaterilly.
Yassar Arafat has vowed to declare a Palestinian state if the two sides can't reach an accord by September 13th.
The Martinsville unemployment rate is looking better.
The Virginia Employment Commission just released numbers for the month of June.
Martinsville's rate is now 13 point 7 down more than two percent.
But still Martinsville has the highest unemployment rate in the state. And the V-E-C says they are concerned with several companies such as Pulaski Furniture, Ridgeway Clocks and Pillowtex slowing down production.

V-E-C officials say those three companies do not normally take so much time off. The average is a week.
But they have not heard that any of those companies are permanently shutting down.
Norfolk Southern announced today that it will layoff some employees- those workers who install and maintain signal systems along the tracks in the railroad in the Eastern region.
Beginning August 9th, 53 members of the Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen in the Virginia Division are being furloughed.
48 are members of signal construction gangs.
5 are signal maintenance workers.
Ten thousand bank employees, including some in Virginia, are losing their jobs.
The Bank of America announced it's cutting back seven percent of its workforce to revive growth and reduce costs.
The company's announcement comes nearly two years after it merged with Nationsbank which owned numerous branches throughout Virginia.
The cuts mark the latest wave of sharp job reductions at the bank. Since the merger, the bank has slashed about twenty five thousand jobs.

A company that makes baby carriers is recalling one of its products after two infants fell through them and fractured their skulls.
The carriers made by the Hufco Delaware Company were sold under the name Gerry Trailtech.
They are slate blue with teal trim or green with black trim and black plastic frames.
The baby carrying backpacks were sold for four years beginning in 1996.
Officials say the leg openings are too big and allowed small infants to slip through.
Just last year Hufco-Delaware and Evenflo Company recalled Snugli Front and Back Pack soft infant carriers, for the same type of problem.

Beginning August 1st, retired employees of Babcock and Wilcox in Campbell County could be facing huge increases in their health insurance premiums.. or no insurance at all.
About 600 retirees between the ages of 55 and 65 have been told their premiums are going up again.. some will be as high as 12- hundred dollars a month for family coverage.
Company officials say the problem is no insurance company is willing to take on that age group.

If 85 percent of the retirees don't accept the new plan, they could lose their insurance altogether.

The federal court in Roanoke has set aside three weeks for the moonshining case that's now scheduled to go to trial in September.
More of the defendants were arraigned today... including Dee Stanley, and William Lewis Helms. 27 people now face federal charges in the wake of Operation Lightning Strike.
Also pleading not guilty today was Barbara Ellen Hale. Twelve more defendants are due in court next week.
The trial is now set to begin in late September, but defense attorneys are expected to request a continuance.

Residents of Northwest Roanoke will soon be able to stay in their neighborhood to find health care.
A first class health and wellness center is coming to the community.
It will be called Kuumba and will be located at the 37-hundred block of Melrose Avenue.
The facility is a modular unit and will be moved onto the site within the next few weeks.
While the center will be a federally qualified physicians office, patients will have to pay.

Lee says getting this center in the area was a joint effort between health care providers and local churches.
The center is expected to open in early September with one physician and a nurse practitioner.

For the past three weeks, Roanoke College Men's Basketball Coach Page Moir has been hosting his annual basketball camp for young men ages 8-15.

The competition between the U-S and Japan has reached a high point, but things will soon be going down hill...fast.

An amusement park just west of Tokyo unveiled the world's tallest, deepest, fastest and longest roller coasters today.
The Steel Dragon 2000 is 328 feet high. The cars reach speeds of 95 miles per hour on the 81 hundred foot course.
The whole ride last three and a half minutes and it cost the park 55 MILLION dollars to build. It will open to the public next week.
Up until now the Millenium Force at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio was the world's biggest roller coaster.
