PRESTON RICO: THEY TOLD ME IF I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE TIRE, COME IN AND GET IT CHECKED AND SEE IF THEY CAN DO A VISUAL CHECK. There's only one problem: by Ford's own admission...a VISUAL check of the tires won't detect the problem! The tires peel to shreds without warning. And while it's happening on many types of sport utility vehicles, there's an especially disturbing number of accidents among Ford Explorers. Ford and Firestone insist there's no trend. And this memo obtained by CBS News shows Firestone dismissed similar allegations years ago. "After a series of accidents involving...Explorers" in 1996, the company writes, "...Firestone conducted a full investigation and found the tires to be perfectly safe and sound." Yet a new analysis by a research firm reveals that Explorers are EIGHT TIMES more likely to be in deadly tire-related crashes, than a comparable SUV with different tires: the Jeep Cherokee. ))
