Carmike has 85 screens in Virginia and seven theaters in Central and Southwest Virginia. No word yet on the future for those theaters.
Managers say its business as usual, but the company IS going through some major reorganization.
Analysts blame the bankruptcy on construction of too many giant theaters, and the company's failure to close older, less profitabale ones.

Pulaski County High School will open it's doors on time even after an explosion last month.

But the room is being rebuilt quickly.
School officials expect to have water and gas restored before classes start August 23rd.

In the meantime, classes will be dismissed at 1:30.

French investigators now say a stray piece of metal on the runway may have caused the Concorde crash.

Investigators compared the shape of the metal piece to a cut in one of the tires destroyed "at the start of the accident and now believe it is more than likely "this metal piece cut the tire."

The theory suggests the metal piece caused the tire to rupture and send heavy wheel fragments into several of the planes fuel tanks on the left wing-- triggering a significant fuel leak and then deadly fire.
Officials say this theory still has to be proven- 113 people were killed in the crash.

after a Navy helicopter went down in the Gulf of Mexico near Corpus Christi, Texas, this morning. Officials say that two more crew members were pulled from the water. They are hospitalized in stable condition. A Coast Guard official says six people were aboard the helicopter when it crashed and sank in about 50 feet of water.

A Floyd County Sheriff's deputy is in critical condition tonight after a head-on collision yesterday.

45-year-old deputy Roger Dickerson suffered internal injuries and broken bones in the accident on Ridgeview Road.


State police say another motorist: 41-year-old Becky Gillespie crossed the center line and struck his car head-on.
Gillespie died at the scene.
State police still don't know how she ended up on the other side of the road.

A Martinsville Attorney may be on the other side of the stand-- he's been indicted for tax evasion.
The government claims Rickey Young failed to file a tax return for five years in the mid-90's.
The 48-year old lawyer was also charged with understating the purchase of used cars to avoid paying sales tax. In 1995, Young bought a Jaguar, a Porsche and two Mercedes Benz, claiming to have paid two thousand dollars or less for each of them.

Young represents Roanoke Police Officer Fred Pledge. Though today's indictment comes just three weeks after Pledge was indicted for racketeering, Prosecutor Rick Mountcastle says there's no relationship between the two cases.

Roger Broughman spent four days before a jury but the jury could not decide whether he was guilty of murder. So rather than go through it again -- Broughman pled guilty to manslaughter and took a six month jail sentence. Firearms charges were dropped against him as part of the plea agreement. Broughman killed his brother Rocky, who murdered their father 20 years ago.

The 1999 campaign saw VMI go one and 10, but the players returned to do battle this season and at least for 2000 the attrition seems to have stopped.
