Pulaski's Chief of Police, Herbert Cooley, has been appointed as Vinton's new police chief .
He replaces former Police Chief Ricky Foutz, who resigned last year amid an investigation of missing guns and drugs in the department's evidence room.

He says he wants to build a positive image of the police department.

You'll remember, Chief Foutz and Lieutenant Bill Brown left the Vinton Police department last November after an investigation into the mishandling of guns, drugs and cash was launched by the Virginia State Police.
A grand jury did NOT hand up any indictments against Foutz or Brown.
Foutz is suing the town of Vinton for more than ten-million dollars.

Cooley was one three finalists for the position.
A panel of 12 people conducted the interview processs - and the Town Council made the final decision.

A group that came together to ultimately improve I- 81.
Today-- lawmakers and state officials announced that some of their suggestions will indeed be implemented in the coming months.

Keith, officials also talked about plans to eventually widen 16 miles of 81 in Roanoke County.
They hope to have preliminary plans folks can look at sometime next summer.

Plans for the new south county high school have raised concerns about run-off, but today Roanoke County and state officials unveiled a project that should address neighbors' worries.

Meanwhile, site preparations for the new high school are moving forward. And construction could begin by the end of September.

The headmaster at North Cross School is leaving.
Will Stacey has been the Head of School for seven years.
Stacey plans to continue his career at another school, and says North Cross will be left in excellent condition.
His resignation will take effect next year.
Many Henry County children attended their first day of school.
It's an exciting time for many. But for others, the first day meant reliving a near death experience.

Dorothea Martin must spend ten years in prison for planning to murder her husband, with the help of her lover, Thomas Gray.
Gray took the fifth amendment in court but the judge accepted comments he'd made out of court, admitting to the crime.
Dorothea Martin says that should NOT have been allowed -- but the Supreme Court disagreed and her sentence stands.

Today the New Orleans Saints cut former Pulaski Co. and Va. Tech kicker Shayne Graham. Shayne's dad said his son got the news this morning at seven, but that he had known for some time he was not in New Orleans' plans. Shayne still hopes to get a shot this preseason with another NFL team, since several including the Panthers have unstable kicking situations.
The Virginia football team is preparing for it's showdown with BYU September second at Scott Stadium in the Cavaliers season opener.
