((Gulf Air flight 72...enroute from Cairo to Bahrain... was preparing to land when something apparently went wrong.
Officials in Bahrain say the Airbus A-320 made TWO failed landing attempts and was on its third approach when the jet crashed into the Persian Gulf.
The plane...with 143 people on board...went down in 30 to 40 feet of water about three miles from shore.
Tonight, as grieving relatives converge on the airport in Cairo, the US Navy is helping in the search and rescue at the crash scene.
COMMANDER JEFF GRADECK, USN:
"At the moment we have three helicopters on scene, we have ten small craft. We also have four other ships that are en route to help."
The plane that crashed was identical to this one...an A-320...only six years old with relatively few flight hours and no known safety problems.
The A-320...a medium range twin engine jet... is one of the most widely used airplanes in the world and a direct competitor of Boeing's 737.
ORR:
Investigators have few clues as to what caused today's crash. Some eyewitnesses reported hearing engine problems. But, controllers say the pilots did not report any trouble. Also, the weather and visibility were both reported to be fine at the time. So what went wrong? The answer may be revealed by the plane's highly sophisticated flight data recorder. ))
