Interstate 81 is getting a new look in some places.

Transportation officials plan to use 37 and a half million dollars in state funding to upgrade the highway.
Plans include lengthening the acceleration lanes where 581 joins North and Southbound 81.
Similar improvements will take place at exits 109, 114 and 162 near Buchanan.
Road crews will also be installing median guardrails in hopes of lessening the number of crashes involving vehicles that cross the median into oncoming traffic.

A Radford University student is in critical condition after being hit by another student's car- is in critical condition.

20-year-old junior Stephanie Kidd was leaving class walking to her car when she was accidentally hit by a fellow student.
21-year-old Hilary Brooke Hunt has been charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Signs along that part of the street instruct motorists to stop for anyone in the crosswalk.

A car hit him while he walked to the bus stop one year ago.
He suffered severe injuries including brain damage.

The navy has given a 43 million dollar contract to a local company.

A bank robbery conviction will mean 10 years in prison for a Roanoke man.

In October, 1998, Yvon Majeus went into the First National Exchange Bank wearing a mask.
At gunpoint he ordered the nine employees and two customers onto the floor while he gathered up more than 5-thousand dollars.

He and a 17-year old accomplice robbed the same bank less than a month later.
A teller testified today she's STILL afraid.

The state Supreme Court has denied an appeal from a woman who plotted to kill her husband.

Dorothea Martin must spend ten years in prison for planning to murder her husband, with the help of her lover, Thomas Gray.
Gray took the fifth amendment in court but the judge accepted comments he'd made out of court, admitting to the crime. Dorothea Martin says that should NOT have been allowed -- but the Supreme Court disagreed and her sentence stands.

Yesterday, Roanoke County and state officials unveiled a storm water management project that should control flooding in the area.

The heavy equipment was hard at work yesterday afternoon, as county officials accepted a 230- thousand dollar state grant that will help pay for the 900- thousand dollar project.
