Wachovia has announced 16 local bank employees will be layed off.
It's part of the larger 18-hundred person layoff scheduled for 2001.

Wachovia Bank has 20 branches and employs more than 400 people in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and Blacksburg.
The bank says the layoffs are a bid to cut costs and boost earnings.
The dually-based Atlanta and Winston-Salem bank told investors that rising interest rates put a huge damper on marginal profits.
The company says the layoffs will have an impact on all levels of its workforce.

The sheriff's department unveiled its new tactical armored vehicle yesterday.. four and a half tons of state- of- the- art ballistic material on four wheels.
The T-A-V will be used for hostage situations, barricaded criminals and high risk drug raids.
The vehicle is already nicknamed "The Beast". It comes at no local cost to Bedford taxpayers.. "The Beast" its armament and radios were all donated or covered by federal grants.

Virginia Gas is already building a 55-mile pipeline from Radford to Clearbrook in Roanoke County.
Last month, Roanoke County supervisors passed a resolution, asking the company to run the pipeline along an EXISTING one to reduce environmental damage.
Last night, Montgomery County followed suit.
