For both George W. Bush and AL Gore -- Labor Day meant LABORING.
With both candidates in a dead heat, the pressure is on, and mistakes
are being made.
In Chicago, George W. Bush -- who has campaigned on bringing
civility back to politics -- was apparently oblivious to an open
microphone, and said THIS about a critical New York Times reporter.
GEORGE W. BUSH:
"There's Adam Clymer, major league #$hole for the New York Times.
Cheney: Oh yeah, big time."
When his running mate AGREED with the remark -- it only hightened a
campaign mis-step the Gore camp says is the sign of a desperate candidate.
CHRIS LEHANE, GORE SPOKESMAN:
"In the face of his declining poll numbers and the pressure of the fall campaign, the Governor's conduct is both unfortuante, and very curious."
It comes just a day after Bush announced he would only accept ONE of three debates proposed by a bi-partisan Commission on Presidential
Debates.
Instead he proposed two of his own -- one on NBC, one on CNN -- both shorter and both likely to have a smaller TV audience.
GEORGE W. BUSH, REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE:
"My opponent says he will debate anytime anyplace."
Gore, who was in the middle of a marathon 27 hour Labor Day
campaign swing, admits he DID say that. But now says he'll comply only
if Bush agrees to comply with tradition.
AL GORE-DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE:
"Why not just accept the Commission debates? The bi-partisan forums that
his dad accepted, that Bob Dole accepted, that every candidate has accepted at least since '88 and many before that."
Bush says Gore is bound by his word to show up. But the Debate Commision hasn't agreed to Bush's "one only" plan -- leaving it up to
the two campaigns to figure out what's next. Lee Cowan, CBS News
