During a meeting with concerned residents Edwards acknowledged making a new line instead of following the existing one would impact 100 fewer landowners, avoid four nature preserves, affect 26 fewer creek crossings.
But since East Tennessee Natural Gas Company refused to allow Virginia Gas to build along its existing line it's left the company with one less option.))

Residents are also upset because they say they didn't receive notification that Virginia Gas was proposing a pipeline.
The company says they did what was required under regulations by the state corporation commission.

After taking construction bids for the new south county high school, the Roanoke County School Board has decided to try again.

The county advertised 19 different contracts for the new school. There were no bids in five categories, and others were substantially higher than budget estimates.
Tonight, the school board voted to re-advertise the project as a single contract, in an effort to interest more local builders.

The decision will cause a delay of about 30 days, but officials say the new high school should still be completed in time for the start of classes in the Fall of 2002.

A farmer from Illinois was brought before house lawmakers today- The man says his farm produces him an annual income of about 40-thousand dollars-
He says it doesn't make him a rich man yet he claims his farm would still be subject to a hefty inheritance tax when he dies.

Despite the farmers plea- the house did not have enough votes to override the President's veto of the bill to get rid of the estate tax.
65 Democrats did join with republicans hoping to get rid of the tax. But it was still 14 votes shy of an override.

Jacuzzi Whirlpool and Bath says a cooling economy has forced them to cut back on production.
The Salem site will now be a distribution center.
The company says it will work with the the Virginia Employment Commission to help furloughed workers find new jobs.

Frustrated with poor shipping performance... DuPont has filed suit against Norfolk Southern.

The Wall Street Journal reports DuPont is suing Norfolk Southern seeking damages for "rail-service breakdowns" after the Conrail merger.
The suit says N-S has not provided timely, uninterrupted and reliable service.
DuPont says disruptions affected at least a dozen plants, forcing it to slow production and use more expensive means of transportation.
Norfolk Southern says it has been working with customers who have service-related complaints, but has not been able to resolve issues with DuPont.

N-S may also have trouble from one of its unions... The Brotherhood of Railway Signalmen is filing 170 liability claims against the railroad tomorrow.
The union's vice-president says the company violated the New York Doc agreement which says if two railroads merge, the new company is responsible for the welfare of former employees.
More than 200 signalmen have been furloughed in the past three months.
They union says N-S may claim the layoffs were not a result of the merger, but instead, a result of decreasing rail traffic.

A submarine under construction-
U-S drug enforcement agents say it was equipped for a crew of three- and could have carried up to 2-hundred tons of cocaine.
Construction notes found at the site were in Russian- but investigators say it was two Americans who signed for the warehouse and it was their presence and attitude that caused neighbors to call police.

Today, a judge convicted Paul Stolbun for depriving his wife of food, water and medication.
Witnesses testified they found the 75 year old woman dying and covered with bed sores, bruises and urine.

The Virginia Tech Hokies were on the road at East Carolina last night and Tech gets a 45 to 28 win.

After leading 3 to nothing the Tech defense blocks this punt Cory Bird scoops it up on the run and scores from 9 yards out and the Hokies led 10 to nothing in the first.
A Chad Beasley interception set up this Andre Kendrick 14 yard score on the option play and Tech went up 17 to nothing still in the first quarter.
Then after a Lee Suggs 38 yard gain Jarrett Ferguson gets the handoff and bulls over from 7 yards out and the Hokies led 24 to nothing early in the second quarter.

Also, Sprint announced yesterday that Kyle Petty will drive the number 45 Sprint Chevy, once piloted by his late son Adam, when the Cup series rolls into Martinsville on October 1st. Next season Kyle will drive the Sprint Dodge full-time.

One of the Roanoke Express's top scorers from last season has been invited to the preseason training camp of the
Minnesota Moose of the International Hockey League.

The 22-nd annual Lu Merrit, Senior open tennis tournament begins this weekend.
Today more than 200 area tennis players will begin play in the weekend event at Hidden Valley Country club.
70-doubles teams, 18 adult singles and 19 junior singles players have registered to play.
