Greeting folks and welcome to the Friday night high school football party known as Friday Football Extra.
For 17 season, Your Hometown Station has been cranking out the highlights in communities all across southwest and central Virginia, and year in and year out this is one of my favorite nights of the season - rivalry night.
[GRAPHIC=PULASKI/SALEM]
And we begin with what Salem coach Willis White says is the best rivalry in the world - Pulaski County and Salem.
Back in the day when they both were members of the Roanoke Valley district they always managed to give the fans their money's worth.
You might get a tight overtime win like Salem got in 1987 or a lopsided blowout like the Cougars posted in 1993.
But one thing you always know you're going to get is raw emotionn on both sides of the fence.
Roy Stanley has the scoop on tonight's Cougars-Spartans hookup - the battle between the number and two ranked teams in the Super 7.

For the second straight week, Fleming and E.C. Glass were involved in a Roanoke Valley-Western district struggle.

[SUPER=51-Roanoke/E.C. Glass vs. Fleming; :00]
The Colonel faithful were cranking it out, as usual tonight as the city decided to play this game at the stadium and not at the River's Edge.
Fleming would take a 10-to-7 lead into the third quarter when Richard Barrett tries to go deep. His pass is picked off by John Davis and he brings the rock all the way back to the Fleming 25 yard line.
Six plays later and still in the third, Adrian Herndon runs in from the four yard line on a second and goal to put Glass in front 14-to-10.
With 4:30 left in the game, Glass would drop back to punt, the East Carolina snapper can't get it to him and Fleming recovers on the Glass 13 yard line.
Then on a fourth and six with 3;24 to play in the game, Barrett throws out to the right flat

Franklin County would try to get something going in the third as Daniel Bowles hands off to Keith Cooper and the big fullback barrels in from the one.

But GW was the real deal tonight as the reserves also got into the act. Bryon Martin scores on the final play of the game.

Late in the second, Blacksburg has a third and 14 from the Knights' 27.
Indians quarterback Brett Smith has his pass picked off by Daniel Payne - those new Knights' uniforms must have confused him. Payne would take off on a lengthy return deep into Indian territory - but he is stripped of the ball and Blacksburg gets it back.

He will pick up the first down and then make himself right at home inside your living room. Byrd alum Dennis Brown with the stellar camera work.
A couple of plays later from his own 35 - Carroll will let Anthony Hackett rips through the far side of the line and score on a nice race to the line. The Highlanders get the 65 yard touchdown and a 7-to-nothing lead late in the first.
But on the ensuing kickoff Byrd will take care of that tally and more as Jerome Mann proves he is the "Man". He receives the kick on his own 20, cuts to the outside, finds a lane and a few seconds later the the endzone.

((The slogan...built Ford tough is not just limited to trucks when it comes to Lord Botetourt's 5'10" 160 pound Ferrari, although Anthony did cover 441 yards with the power of a four wheel drive vehicle in the Cavaliers 45-6 win over Glenvar last Friday night.

Ford's football career began thanks to his football coach, but Ironically, Tony Hart was on the basketball bench when he discovered him three years ago.

Ford and favorite receiver Austin Bousman served as a ball boys for the Roanoke Steam during their season. Quarterback Will Berch's lightning fast release and even quicker decision making abilities found a home in Ford's mental notebook.

Anthony maintains over a 3.0 grade point average and is well over a thousand on his SAT's. Stats on and off the field he hopes will land him a spot on a college roster next year. Steve Mason Friday Football Extra.))
