Governor Gilmore says he had the D-N-A tested partly because he felt European death penalty opponents -- including the Pope -- had heard too much misinformation in the case.

A State Police investigation continues into why the evidence was missing for several hours in Norfolk's Circuit Court.
But State Forensic Chief Paul Ferrara (fe-RAR-uh) says he believes the fingernail clippings he tested were NOT opened or tampered with in any way.
Meanwhile, lawyers for Barnabei will go before a federal judge today in Richmond to seek a stay of his execution.

For now, a decision has been postponed on a controversial subdivision in Botetourt County.

The subdivision would carve this farmland into 64 lots of about an acre each. Such a subdivision will probably be illegal next year, after county planners increase minimum lot sizes. Some residents told county planners to set lot sizes first, THEN vote on new subdivisions.

An Alleghany County woman has been diagnosed with Legionnaires' Disease.
Right now public health officials are not sure where she might have contracted it.
The woman is an employee of Westvaco's Covington Mill.
The company says it has no reason to believe that the disease was contracted at the workplace.
The disease is spread through the air in water vapor by devices such as water taps, water-based humidifiers, and cooling tower air conditioners.
