This evening, hundreds gathered outside the club to take part in a candlelight vigil.
As Kate Weidaw reports... the Roanoke Police Department is investigating this incident as a hate crime.

((Shortly after 11:50 Friday night 53 year old Ronald Edward Gay walked into the Back Street Cafe, ordered a beer and sat down at a table. Minutes later he allegedly pulled a 9 millimeter pistol from his jacket and began firing into the crowd. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic.

Eight rounds were fired from the gun. 43 year old Danny Lee Overstreet of Roanoke was killed. Two other males and four females were taken to Roanoke Memorial with gunshot wounds to their legs, arms, and back. Meanwhile authorities took Gay into custody at the corner of First Street and Campbell Avenue, and later charged him with first degree murder.

A 9 millimeter pistol officials think Gay used was found in a trash can near the bar. Police say they believe this is a hate crime, because several witnesses say prior to the shooting, Gay stated he was "going to shoot some gay people." Gay's neighbor at the Jefferson Lodge says he can't believe he would do something like this.

41-year-old Linda Coniers has been released from the hospital. 40-year-old Joel Tucker and 36-year-old Kathy Caldwell are both in stable condition. 39-year-old John Collins is in serious but guarded condition. And 41-year-old Iris Paige Webb is in critical condition. The name and condition of the sixth victim is not being released at her request.

Christiansburg Police are investigating a robbery at a gas station.
It happened around 9:30 last night at a "Marathon" Station on Cambria Street. Police say a suspect took money from a cash register while the clerk was distracted. They say the suspect did NOT display any weapons, and no one was hurt. Police are still looking for the suspect.

A Henry County man has been arrested in connection with a local kidnapping and robbery. Investigators say 28-year-old Sean Sterling Young forced a 16-year-old male into a vehicle in the Laurel Park area Friday. Authorities say Young then drove to Waycross Drive in Bassett. That's where the victim says he was assaulted and Young stole his jewelry and his jacket. Young is being held in Henry County jail without bond.

Furman would take the lead with 1:27 left in the second quarter when Derek Russell goes in from the one to make it 14 to 10 Paladins.
