((The government had received 169 complaints about Firestone Steeltex R4S and AT tires by consumers who say the tires blew out, or the tread separated at highway speeds. Steeltex tires have been sold as original equipment on many Ford vehicles... including Excursions and F250 and F350 pickups...also some General Motors Suburbans and G-Vans. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the Steeltex tires are suspected to have been a factor in 8 crashes, 12 injuries and two deaths. This new investigation is an outgrowth of the Firestone probe that first focused on all 15" ATX tires and some 15" Wilderness tires. They were recalled last month. Then, when Firestone refused the government's request to recall 24 more types of tires, investigators issued a consumer warning about THEM. Now, officials are trying to figure out the magnitude of the problem with Steeltex tires. One source told CBS News that when investigators reviewed the growing list of complaints about Firestone tires: "This jumped out at us...we had to do something." RIGHT NOW, FEDERAL OFFICIALS HAVE NO ESTIMATE OF HOW MANY OF THE SUSPECT STEELTEX TIRES HAVE BEEN PRODUCED; OR HOW MANY VEHICLES HAVE THEM. FIRESTONE SAYS IT WILL FULLY COOPERATE WITH THE INQUIRY, EVEN WITH WHAT IT CALLS ITS LIMITED STAFF AND RESOURCES...))
